Christian M. Pichler

Christian completed his undergraduate studies at TU Graz in 2015 and obtained a PhD under the joint supervision of Prof. Ferdi Schüth at the Max Planck Institut für Kohlenforschung and Prof. Rolf Breinbauer and TU Graz in 2018. In 2019 he joined the group of Prof. Erwin Reisner at University of Cambridge as Postdoctoral Researcher. In 2022 he was became Vice-CSO at the Centre of Electrochemical and Surface Technology. Since 2025 he is Assistant Professor at TU Wien (Institute of Applied Physics). His research interests include electrocatalysis, catalytic conversion of biomass and waste substrates as well as design and synthesis of functional catalytic materials.

PhD students

Matthias Kogler

Matthias is working on electrode design for redox flow batteries. He is especially intersted in understanding and controlling active centres in carbon materials

Felix Lulay

Felix is investigating the aging mechanisms of battery membranes, together with our collaborator Dr. Claudia Weidlich at DECHEMA, Frankfurt.

Anil Kumar

Anil develops novel gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for electrochemical CO2 conversion in a flow cell. He is interested in understanding the surface activity of GDEs, influencing the product selectivity and stability for CO2 electroreduction.

Prathamesh Patil

Prathamesh applies advanced surface analytic techniques to monitor changes at the surfaces of electrocatalytic materials and understand their aging and degradation mechanisms.

Richard Buchinger

Richard develops novel bio-electrochemical tandem processes for converting plastic waste into value added chemicals.

Neda Vardast

Neda is an exchange PhD student from Sharif University. She works on catalytic conversions of CO2 into chemical intermediates

Hermias Venter

Hermias is working on component design for organic redox flow batteries. He is especially intersted in understanding the degradation mechanisms of membranes and electrodes.

Ana Ivankovic

Ana develops novel Li-adsorber materials for souring Lithium from alternative feedstocks. She tries to understand the atomic changes in the host materials during the adsorption process.

Junyang Zhang

Junyang investigates the fundamental properties of heterogeneous catalysts and develops a coupled process for converting CO2 into sustainable aviation fuels.

Zhijie Feng

Zhijie aims to understand restructuring mechanisms in alloy catalysts used for oxidative reactions.  He combines electrochemistry with advanced surface spectroscopy

Javad Bakhtiari

Javad develops cascade processes and integrates electrochemsitry and thermal catalysis in combined approaches for converting waste substrates into fuels and chemicals
